The Hit Songs Deconstructed Wire

Q3 Hits That Stick

Share:

BACK TO HSD WIRE

While getting into the top 10 of the Hot 100 is a feat in and of itself, being able to stay there for a substantial period of time – such as 10 weeks or more – is next level. Of the 53 songs that charted during the first three-quarters of 2023, only 20 achieved this feat.

Pop was the most popular primary genre among staying power hits, accounting for just over one-third of songs. Country, R&B/soul and hip hop followed far behind at 15% each. Top performers for each include "As It Was" (pop-38 weeks), "Last Night" (country-33 weeks), "Kill Bill" (R&B/soul-28 weeks) and "Fukumean" (hip hop-12 weeks).

Instrumentally, staying power hits notably favored a combination of acoustic and electronic drums compared to songs that charted for nine weeks or less, which favored primarily electronic drums.

Lyrically, while love relationships was most popular across the board, it was notably more popular among songs with staying power. All five of the year's longest charting hits featured a love/relationships lyrical theme, including “As It Was,” “Last Night,” “Kill Bill,” “Flowers” and “Anti-Hero.” On the flip side, lifestyle and hooking up themes were more common among songs that charted for nine weeks or less.

Structurally, some notable differences between staying power hits and their shorter charting cohorts are that they trended shorter, forewent a pre-chorus, included a post-chorus, and ended more abruptly.

I can't stress enough how important HSD is to any serious professional hit songwriter.

Hilton Wright II

Record Producer/Songwriter

As a songwriter, an important part of my job is to analyze what works in successful songs. By identifying the tools that were employed in hits, writers can incorporate them into their own songs--using techniques that have proven successful--while putting their own spin and unique creative angle on them. HSD does the research for me.

- Jason Blume

Songwriter w/50 million album sales and top-selling author, Billboard Books

I am honestly blown away by the amount of information you provide on each of these songs, practically like a thesis deserving of a degree. From a songwriting standpoint, so much of this information is so helpful, and the time-saving benefits are enormous.
