With Q2 coming to a close, Hit Songs Deconstructed analyzed the characteristics shaping the 11 songs (out of 20) that charted for the very first-time in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 last quarter.
Electronic drums and acoustic guitar were notably more popular among the quarter's new arrivals, with the latter reaching its highest level of prominence in over a decade. Conversely, there was notably less synth.
After hip hop all but disappeared in Q1, save for Drake and 21 Savage’s Rich Flex, a new influx of songs represented the genre in Q2 including All My Life, Players, Princess Diana and Search & Rescue, accounting for just over one-third of the quarter’s new arrivals. Pop, on the other hand, was represented by just one new Top 10, Like Crazy. However, when looking at Q2's overall Top 10, pop remained slightly ahead of hip hop.
New Arrivals vs. Carryovers
Overall Top 10
Among the 17 sub-genres and influences that shaped the sound and vibe of new arrivals, pop, hip hop and trap led the way, respectively. Some of the more atypical influences included the burgeoning Jersey club influence in Bad Bunny's Where She Goes, the 1980s funk and hip hop influences in Coi Leray's Players, and the regional Mexican influence in Ella Baila Sola and un x100to.
Some other notable findings include fewer songs featuring love/relationships lyrical themes, an increase in the use of a post-chorus and hook-based intros, and slower tempos.

I can't stress enough how important HSD is to any serious professional hit songwriter.
Hilton Wright II
As a songwriter, an important part of my job is to analyze what works in successful songs. By identifying the tools that were employed in hits, writers can incorporate them into their own songs--using techniques that have proven successful--while putting their own spin and unique creative angle on them. HSD does the research for me.
