What Did 2025’s Longest-Charting Songs Have in Common?

BACK TO HSD WIRE

Hit Songs Deconstructed analyzed every top 10 hit of 2025, and the patterns among the songs that stuck around longest are worth paying attention to.

In a year packed with viral moments and quick-burn hits, 22 of the 64 songs that charted in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 in 2025 managed to hold their place for 10 weeks or more. Hit Songs Deconstructed's new 2025 Staying Power Report takes a close look at what those songs shared compositionally, and how they differed from tracks that cycled off the chart more quickly.

The Undisputed Champion of 2025

Teddy Swims' "Lose Control" sat in the top 10 for an extraordinary 80 weeks following its initial entry back in 2024, far outpacing every other song in the analysis. Shaboozey's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" followed at 66 weeks, with Billie Eilish's "Birds of a Feather" and Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso" each logging 33 weeks.

Some Patterns Worth Noting

Among the songs that charted longest, a few characteristics stood out compared to their shorter-charting counterparts:

  • They tended to be shorter — averaging 3:17 versus 3:29, and nearly twice as likely to run under three minutes.
  • Retro influences, particularly from the 1980s, appeared at nearly double the rate.
  • Pre-choruses were present in 73% of long-charting songs, versus 40% of shorter-charting ones.

The report goes deep into genres and influences, lyrical themes, song structure: intro length, chorus placement, bridge usage, how songs end, and much more.

I can't stress enough how important HSD is to any serious professional hit songwriter.

Hilton Wright II

Record Producer/Songwriter

As a songwriter, an important part of my job is to analyze what works in successful songs. By identifying the tools that were employed in hits, writers can incorporate them into their own songs--using techniques that have proven successful--while putting their own spin and unique creative angle on them. HSD does the research for me.

I am honestly blown away by the amount of information you provide on each of these songs, practically like a thesis deserving of a degree. From a songwriting standpoint, so much of this information is so helpful, and the time-saving benefits are enormous.
