I Had Some Help’s Cross-Section Melodic Arrangement

BACK TO HSD WIRE

“I Had Some Help,” a Hot 100 #1 smash by Post Malone and Morgan Wallen and Billboard’s 2024 “Song of the Summer,” features an expertly crafted melodic structure that meticulously evolves across sections.

Along with heightening interest, engagement, and catchiness, the melodies effectively serve the narrative, amplifying the emotion present in the lyrics.

“I Had Some Help’s” Melodic Patterns & Qualities

Verse 1

Verse 1 features the widest range in the song, spanning an octave from C3 up to C4. While this makes the section a bit more challenging for the average listener to sing along to, it’s offset by several K.I.S.S. ME (Keep It Simple, Singable, and Memorable) qualities.

The verse includes mainly descending, easy-to-follow melodic patterns and features a repetitive AAAB melodic structure across its four lines. It utilizes abundant stepwise motion with a few moderate leaps. The moderate-length lines are broken into shorter, easier-to-digest segments through melodic and rhythmic contrast (Lines 1-3: G3–C4 / C3 to E3). Additionally, it combines easy-to-lock-into syncopated rhythms in the first segments of lines 1-3 and straight rhythms in the second segments.

In addition, the verse melodies also effectively serve the narrative:

  • Line 1 (A-Melody): “You got a lotta nerve, don't you, baby?”
  • Line 2 (A-Melody): “I only hit the curb 'cause you made me”
  • Line 3 (A-Melody): “You're tellin' all your friends that I'm crazy”
  • Line 4 (B-Melody): “Like I'm the only one”

The melodic repetition of the “A” melody across the first three lines allows the listener to easily engage with the backstory, which depicts a falling out between two characters, likely due to the protagonist's actions. However, the shift to the “B” melody in line 4 draws attention to the key lyric, “Like I’m the only one.” This establishes that the relationship's demise lies on both their shoulders and serves as the main essence of the story that follows.

Record Producer/Songwriter

As a songwriter, an important part of my job is to analyze what works in successful songs. By identifying the tools that were employed in hits, writers can incorporate them into their own songs--using techniques that have proven successful--while putting their own spin and unique creative angle on them. HSD does the research for me.
